Daprè nou kijan bri tanbou sonnen anba lanmè?
Kijan twal saten blan enpoze l nan mitan koulè alg, koray, pwason, lagratèl?
Kijan chalè touche yon men ye?
Kijan chèdpoul parèt?
Se sa yo m eseye imajine lè m ap panse a kisa yon seremoni anba lanmè t ap ye.
In Haitian Vodou, Agwe and Lasirèn are powerful spirits of the sea. Agwe is associated with the vastness of the ocean, ships, sailors, and the mysteries of the waters, while Lasirèn embodies beauty, seduction, abundance, intuition, and the hidden knowledge found beneath the surface.
In this illustration, Agwe and Lasirèn meet beneath the sea, hand in hand, surrounded by fish and remnants of the human world. Above them, boats travel across the surface while an entire spiritual realm unfolds below, suggesting that what we see is only a small part of what exists.
Their encounter becomes a meeting between two forces of the same water: the one who navigates its immensity and the one who inhabits its depths.
The piece draws on the Haitian imagination of the sea as more than a physical landscape. It is a place of mystery, memory, passage, and ancestral presence, a boundary between worlds, where the visible and invisible can exist together.
