This illustration was made for my Residency with Haitian Cultural Exchange in New York. You might not know this, but I really love plants. Almost every time I go out, I come back home with a new plant.

And I’m always imagining that my plants have relationships with each other, whether friendly, romantic, or family-like. Every time I look at them, I imagine how they must be interacting and how they would decide to get along and live together if they were animated.

My inspiration is a beautiful little orange tree behind the house that always gives us good oranges. And it seems to always take care of itself, despite everything, it keeps nourishing itself from the soil and its surroundings.

I’m taking this opportunity to thank HCX for the Rasin Lakay program they set up. It allowed me to create this series of illustrations to show how I see my plants in my mind. I divided them into different types of love.

This first one is Self-Love.
